Eightstring

Eightstring, frequently written as eight-string, is a term used to describe stringed instruments that add two lower-pitched strings to a conventional six-string or four-string bass, expanding the instrument’s lower range. The best-known form is the eight-string guitar, though the concept also includes eight-string basses and other extended-range instruments. These instruments are designed to provide deeper tones while retaining the familiar upper strings for conventional chords and melodies.

Design and construction vary, but most eight-string guitars extend the standard six strings with two additional lower strings. This often leads to a longer scale length and reinforced necks to handle increased tension. Bodies, pickups, and hardware range from traditional rock designs to metal-focused models with high-output pickups and locking bridges. Scale lengths typically fall in the 25.5 to 26.5 inch range, though shorter or longer options exist depending on the maker and intended genre.

Tuning and playability differ across players, but a common approach is to tune the two lowest strings down relative to standard six-string tunings, enabling extended-range riffs and lower-pitched chords while preserving the feel of the upper strings. String gauges are generally heavier to accommodate higher tensions, and setups often require precise intonation and careful nut and bridge adjustments. The extended range invites experimentation with drop tunings and tonal textures used in modern metal, progressive rock, jazz fusion, and experimental music.
