Efnisyfirlitið

Efnisyfirlitið is an Icelandic term that translates literally as “content overview” or “table of contents.” The word is most often used in the context of curricular and instructional design in Iceland’s public education system. It refers to a formal document that outlines the learning objectives, key topics, teaching methods, assessment criteria, and recommended resources for a particular subject or series of courses. By compiling these elements into a single, structured guide, the Efnisyfirlitið serves as a reference for teachers, curriculum developers, and educational policymakers.

The concept was introduced in the early 2000s as part of a national effort to standardise teaching quality across the country. In 2005 Iceland’s Ministry of Education issued guidelines specifying the format and contents of an Efnisyfirlitið, which must be approved by local school boards before implementation. The documents are reviewed biennially to ensure they remain aligned with national educational standards and emerging academic research.

Beyond formal schooling, the term is also applied, albeit less formally, to scientific publications and technical reports in Iceland. In these cases an Efnisyfirlitið functions similarly to a detailed outline that assists readers in navigating complex material. Although the term is primarily Icelandic, its principles are comparable to the curricula frameworks used in many other Nordic and European countries.
