EFET

EFET, or the European Federation of Energy Traders, is a European non-profit trade association that represents energy trading companies in liberalized markets across Europe. Founded in the 1990s by a group of independent energy traders, EFET aims to facilitate cross-border trading, promote competition, and develop market standards to reduce transaction costs and risk.

The federation coordinates industry-wide activities, including the development and maintenance of standard documentation used in energy trades. Its most widely used instruments are EFET contracts and related documents for electricity, gas, and related energy products, designed to standardize terms, delivery, settlement, and credit arrangements between counterparties. EFET also promotes best practices in risk management, settlement processes, and collateral frameworks, and engages with regulators and standardization bodies to support market liberalization and interoperability.

EFET operates as a network of member companies and national associations. It is governed by a board and a secretariat that coordinates policy work, technical committees, and outreach programs. The association maintains working relationships with European policy makers, grid operators, and financial counterparties to advance efficient, transparent trading practices across the European energy markets. EFET is best known for its contract templates and for fostering a common language among traders, utilities, suppliers, and financial institutions in Europe. The organization continues to adapt its standards to evolving market rules, digital trading platforms, and sustainable energy initiatives.
