EEGLAB

EEGLAB is an open-source MATLAB-based software package for the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) data and related electrophysiological signals. It provides tools for data import, preprocessing, visualization, and analysis, including event-related potentials, time-frequency analysis, and independent component analysis (ICA). It is widely used in neuroscience research and education.

Key features include a graphical user interface and a scripting interface, support for multiple data formats via built-in import/export and plugins, and preprocessing capabilities such as filtering, epoching, artifact rejection, and re-referencing. ICA-based artifact removal and source separation are central to its workflow. EEGLAB also includes DIPFIT for dipole fitting, ICLabel for automatic component classification, and time-frequency methods (Morlet wavelets, spectrograms) with rich visualization tools.

The software is modular and extensible through a plugin architecture, allowing users to add functionality for additional algorithms or data formats. EEGLAB runs in MATLAB and can be used through its GUI or programmatically; there is also some compatibility with GNU Octave in certain setups.

Developed by Arnaud Delorme and Scott Makeig in the mid-1990s at UC San Diego, EEGLAB is maintained by a community of developers and researchers and is widely cited in EEG research. It supports common analyses in cognitive and clinical neuroscience and remains a central tool for offline processing and exploration of EEG data.
