The substrate influences several key aspects of thin film technology. Its thermal expansion coefficient must often match that of the film to prevent stress and cracking during temperature changes. Surface roughness of the substrate plays a significant role in the nucleation and growth of the thin film, affecting its morphology, grain size, and ultimately its electrical, optical, or mechanical properties. For flexible electronics, substrates like PET or PEN films are employed. The substrate also provides mechanical support and electrical insulation or conductivity, depending on the application. Contamination on the substrate surface can lead to defects in the thin film, making surface preparation and cleaning paramount.
