The broader Christian concept of baptism traces its roots to the Greek baptizein, transmitted through Latin and various European languages, and signifies cleansing, rebirth, and admission to the community of faith.

Practice across denominations: In Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestant churches, baptism is a sacramental act that inaugurates a person into the Christian community and is associated with grace.
