Däckslitage refers to the gradual wearing down of a tire's tread. This process is a natural consequence of friction between the tire and the road surface during normal driving. Several factors contribute to the rate of däckslitage, including driving style, tire pressure, wheel alignment, and the type of road surface. Aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration and braking, accelerates wear. Improper tire inflation, either under- or over-inflation, also leads to uneven and faster wear patterns. Misaligned wheels can cause the tire to scrub against the road, significantly increasing wear on one side. The composition and hardness of the tire rubber also play a role in its lifespan.

Monitoring däckslitage is crucial for safety and performance. Severely worn tires have reduced grip, especially in wet conditions, increasing the risk of hydroplaning and accidents. The legal limit for tread depth varies by region, but generally, once the tread is significantly diminished, the tire's ability to channel water away is compromised. Regular inspection of tires for wear patterns, such as cupping or feathering, can indicate underlying issues like improper inflation or alignment that should be addressed. Replacing worn tires promptly ensures optimal braking, handling, and overall vehicle safety.
