Driftspress is a term used in printing technology to describe an experimental class of press systems that integrates controlled ink drift with the nip-based transfer of a traditional press. The aim is to improve print uniformity on irregular or highly textured substrates while maintaining precise tonal reproduction.

Origins of the concept trace to design and research labs in the 2020s, where researchers sought methods to reduce ink bleed and enhance adhesion on unconventional substrates. Driftspress discussions typically appear in early-stage research notes and prototype demonstrations rather than in standardized industrial practice.

Principles of operation involve delivering ink as micro-droplets with a programmable drift vector within a controlled transfer zone. A press nip then applies pressure to fix the drifted ink onto the substrate. Real-time sensing, using optical or capacitive methods, guides a feedback loop that adjusts droplet size, drift velocity, nip pressure, and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity to optimize transfer.

Materials and methods commonly rely on low-viscosity pigment inks and substrate surface treatments to promote consistent settling of drifted droplets.
