Dobfékeknél, often translated as "drum brakes," are a type of braking system used in vehicles. They operate by utilizing a rotating drum that is attached to the wheel hub. Inside the drum, there are two curved brake shoes that are spring-loaded and designed to expand outward. When the driver applies the brakes, hydraulic pressure is used to push the brake shoes against the inner surface of the rotating drum. This friction between the shoes and the drum creates resistance, slowing down the wheel and thus the vehicle.

The components of a drum brake system include the brake drum, brake shoes, wheel cylinder, return springs, and parking brake mechanism. The wheel cylinder is a hydraulic actuator that pushes the brake shoes outward. Return springs pull the shoes back to their original position when the brake pedal is released. Many drum brake systems also incorporate a parking brake, which mechanically actuates the brake shoes to hold the vehicle stationary when parked.

Drum brakes were historically very common on both front and rear wheels of vehicles, particularly in older designs. They are generally considered simpler and more cost-effective to manufacture than disc brakes. However, they can be prone to brake fade under heavy use due to heat buildup within the enclosed drum. For this reason, modern vehicles predominantly use disc brakes, especially on the front wheels, which offer better heat dissipation and performance. Drum brakes are still commonly found on the rear wheels of many smaller cars, trucks, and as parking brakes in conjunction with disc brakes.
