Djeran

Djeran is the third season of the Warlpiri traditional calendar, located in the central desert region of Australia. It generally falls between June and August. This season is characterized by cooler temperatures and drier conditions following the heat of Mullu and before the rains of Warlawurru.

During Djeran, the days are often sunny and mild, with temperatures gradually dropping as the season progresses. Nights can become quite cold, sometimes even experiencing frost. This period is a time of transition, where the landscape begins to show the effects of reduced rainfall. Water sources may start to diminish, and the vegetation, while still holding onto some green from the previous season, begins to dry out.

The animal life also adapts to these changing conditions. Many animals become more active in the cooler mornings and evenings. The availability of certain food sources may shift, influencing hunting and gathering practices. Djeran is an important time for traditional ceremonies and for passing down cultural knowledge, as the weather is often conducive to gathering for extended periods. It represents a period of rest and preparation before the onset of the next season.
