Dispyt

Dispyt is a neologism used to describe a class of online disputes that originate from the interpretation of digital displays—such as images, screenshots, memes, user interfaces, or video frames—in ways that diverge from the intended meaning. The term combines display and dispute and is used in media studies and internet culture commentary to analyze how visuals function in argumentation, where a disagreement centers on how something is shown rather than what is plainly written.

Etymology and usage have emerged from internet commentary in the mid-2010s, with early appearances in tech blogs and discussion forums. The concept gained traction as scholars described conflicts sparked by visual presentation, not just textual claims. It is often discussed in studies of online rhetoric and misinformation.

Characteristics of dispyt include disputes that are triggered by a visual artifact, debates focused on perceived intent or missing context that the image alone does not convey, and rapid spread through social networks. They are particularly sensitive to framing effects, cognitive biases, and selective perception, and they present moderation and fact-checking challenges because the primary evidence is visual and sometimes ambiguous.

In practice, dispyt analysis examines miscaptioned screenshots, doctored images, or graphs and infographics whose presentation shapes interpretation.
