Discreteline

Discreteline refers to the discrete representation of a straight line on a digital grid or raster image. In this context, a discreteline is typically a sequence of grid points (pixels) that best approximates a real-valued straight line, subject to constraints such as connectivity, monotonic progression along the major axis, and bounded deviation from the true line.

In digital geometry, discrete lines are studied as digital straight segments and are often characterized by incremental construction rules. The goal is to produce a chain of neighboring grid points whose geometry preserves the overall direction of the Euclidean line while remaining efficient to compute using integer arithmetic. Conventions vary with slope and orientation, but common properties include monotone progress in the dominant coordinate and small, controlled deviation from the target line.

Generation methods commonly cited in practice include Bresenham’s line algorithm, which uses an incremental error term to decide the next pixel and guarantees a connected, integer-based representation. Other approaches include the digital differential analyzer (DDA) method and anti-aliased variants (e.g., Xiaolin Wu’s line) that trade a strict discrete path for smoother visual appearance.

Discretelines are fundamental in computer graphics, font rendering, and GIS, where continuous lines must be drawn on pixel grids. They also play a role in digital image processing and geometric modeling, where the fidelity and efficiency of a line approximation affect rendering accuracy and performance. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with digital line or digital straight line in related literature.
