Direct-to-retailer (DTR) is a business model in which manufacturers or brands sell products directly to retail buyers rather than through wholesalers, distributors, or other middlemen. In a DTR arrangement, the retailer places orders and takes title to the goods from the manufacturer, who usually manages pricing, terms, and logistics. This approach differs from direct-to-consumer (DTC), where products go directly to end customers, and from traditional wholesale, which relies on intermediaries.

Key features of DTR include bulk orders, negotiated trade terms, and opportunities for joint merchandising or category management. Some implementations also incorporate vendor-managed inventory (VMI) or integrated supply-chain planning. The manufacturer gains closer control over pricing, assortment, and brand messaging on shelves, potentially achieving higher margins and faster replenishment. Retailers benefit from direct access to suppliers, the possibility of exclusive products, and improved visibility into supply and promotions.

Challenges of the DTR model include dependence on retailer relationships, exposure to retail price competition, and complex contract negotiations. It often requires robust forecasting, logistics capabilities, and data-sharing arrangements to ensure inventory levels meet demand. As with any channel strategy, DTR can create conflicts with other channels if not carefully managed.

DTR is used across various sectors, including consumer electronics, apparel, and home goods, where brands seek stronger shelf presence and more direct control over product presentation. It is typically contrasted with wholesale and DTC, and many companies employ hybrid strategies that combine DTR with other channels to optimize market coverage and retailer collaboration.
