Diffraktiokiekon, also known as a diffraction grating, is an optical component with a periodic structure that diffracts light into several beams. These beams are spaced at specific angles, which are determined by the wavelength of the light and the spacing of the grating's elements. Diffraction gratings are used in a wide variety of applications, including spectroscopy, wavelength division multiplexing, and optical signal processing.

The principle behind a diffraction grating's operation is diffraction, the bending of light waves as they pass through an aperture or around an obstacle. When light encounters a diffraction grating, its wavefront is broken up into many smaller wavelets. These wavelets then interfere with each other, either constructively or destructively. Constructive interference occurs when the wavelets are in phase, resulting in a bright spot or beam of light. Destructive interference occurs when the wavelets are out of phase, canceling each other out and resulting in darkness.

The spacing of the diffracted beams depends on the grating's period, which is the distance between adjacent elements of the grating. A smaller period results in a wider separation of the diffracted beams. The angle of diffraction is also dependent on the wavelength of the light. Shorter wavelengths are diffracted at smaller angles, while longer wavelengths are diffracted at larger angles. This property makes diffraction gratings invaluable for separating light into its constituent colors, as is done in a spectrometer.

Diffraction gratings can be fabricated in several ways. Transmission gratings allow light to pass through them, with the diffracting elements being grooves or lines etched into a transparent material. Reflection gratings, on the other hand, reflect light, with the diffracting elements being grooves or lines on a reflective surface. Holographic gratings are created using interference patterns of laser light, often offering higher efficiency and finer rulings.
