Dieselpartikkelisuodatin, often abbreviated as DPF, is a device installed in the exhaust system of diesel vehicles to reduce particulate matter emissions. It works by trapping soot particles that are produced during the combustion process. These trapped particles are then periodically burned off in a process called regeneration, which occurs either automatically or can be manually triggered.

There are two main types of DPF regeneration: active and passive. Active regeneration is initiated by the vehicle's engine control unit when the filter becomes sufficiently full. It involves injecting a small amount of fuel into the exhaust system to raise the temperature and burn off the accumulated soot. Passive regeneration occurs automatically during normal driving conditions, especially at higher speeds, when exhaust temperatures are naturally high enough to burn off the soot.

A clogged DPF can lead to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and in severe cases, engine damage. Regular maintenance and ensuring proper regeneration cycles are crucial for the longevity and effective operation of a DPF. Modern diesel vehicles are equipped with sophisticated systems to monitor DPF status and manage regeneration.
