Dialyysimenettely

Dialyysimenettely, commonly known as dialysis, is a medical treatment that artificially performs the function of the kidneys. This procedure is essential for individuals whose kidneys are failing and can no longer adequately filter waste products, excess fluid, and electrolytes from the blood. Without dialysis, these substances would build up in the body to toxic levels, leading to severe health complications.

There are two primary types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis involves cleaning the blood outside the body using a machine called a dialyzer. Blood is drawn from the patient's body, passed through the dialyzer where waste and excess fluid are removed, and then returned to the body. This process typically occurs multiple times a week in a dialysis center or at home.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the patient's own abdominal lining, the peritoneum, as a natural filter. A sterile solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a catheter. Waste products and excess fluid from the blood in the peritoneal capillaries pass into this solution, which is then drained from the body. This can often be done at home by the patient.

The decision to start dialysis and the choice between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis depend on various factors, including the patient's overall health, lifestyle, and medical history. Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment that requires significant commitment from the patient and their healthcare team.
