These tests can be broadly categorized. Laboratory tests involve analyzing biological samples such as blood, urine, or tissue. Examples include blood counts, cholesterol checks, and genetic testing. Imaging tests utilize different technologies to visualize internal body structures. X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds are common examples used to detect abnormalities in organs, bones, and soft tissues. Other diagnostic methods include physiological tests that measure bodily functions, such as electrocardiograms (ECG) for heart activity or pulmonary function tests for lung capacity.

The interpretation of diagnostic test results is typically done by trained medical professionals, such as physicians and pathologists, who consider the results in conjunction with a patient's medical history, symptoms, and physical examination. False positives and false negatives can occur, meaning a test may indicate a condition that isn't present or fail to detect a condition that is.
