Detektoritesse is a term originating from German, translating to "speed detector." It commonly refers to devices used to measure the speed of vehicles. These devices are integral to traffic enforcement and road safety efforts worldwide.

The most prevalent types of speed detectors include radar guns and lidar guns. Radar guns utilize the Doppler effect, emitting radio waves and measuring the frequency shift of the reflected waves from a moving vehicle to calculate its speed. Lidar guns, on the other hand, use pulsed laser light. They measure the time it takes for the laser pulses to travel to the vehicle and return, using this information to determine distance and subsequently speed.

Other less common methods include speed cameras, which often use inductive loops embedded in the road or advanced camera technology to record vehicle speeds and capture images for enforcement. Mobile speed detectors can be mounted in police vehicles or operated by officers on foot. Stationary speed detectors are typically installed in fixed locations, such as along highways or in urban areas.
