Above this, component libraries contain UI elements like buttons, forms, navigation bars, and icons, often delivered as coded modules (e.g., React, Vue, or Web Components). Documentation accompanies these assets, offering usage guidelines, accessibility recommendations, and best‑practice examples. Governance processes describe how the system evolves, who can contribute, and how changes are reviewed.

Design systems originated in large technology companies seeking to maintain brand coherence across rapidly expanding product suites. Notable early examples include Google's Material Design and IBM's Carbon Design System. Today, many organisations of various sizes adopt design systems, either by customizing open‑source frameworks or by developing proprietary solutions.

The benefits of using a design system extend beyond visual consistency. They promote design‑to‑development handoff, support scalability, and facilitate cross‑functional collaboration. However, successful implementation requires ongoing maintenance, clear ownership, and alignment with business goals to prevent the system from becoming outdated or overly restrictive.
