Deranged

Deranged is an adjective that describes a state of mental disturbance or actions that appear irrational or disordered. In journalism and fiction, it is commonly used to convey danger or extreme irrationality, but writers should use care to avoid sensationalism. Synonyms such as irrational, unhinged, disturbed, or mentally ill convey similar ideas with different levels of connotation.

Deranged also appears in cultural and mathematical terms. In culture, it is used in titles or descriptions of crime fiction and thrillers to evoke menace or abnormality. In mathematics, derangement refers to a permutation with no fixed points, a separate concept that shares the same Latin-root idea of disorder.
