Depredation

Depredation is the act of depredating, or plundering, and the damage that results from such acts. The word comes from the Latin depredare, from de- 'away' and praedari 'to plunder', with praeda meaning booty or spoil. In general usage, depredation describes acts of robbery or destruction, and the harm they cause to people, property, or resources.

In ecological and agricultural contexts, depredation refers to damage caused by wildlife or pests to crops, livestock, fisheries, or beekeeping operations. It encompasses deliberate predation, such as a predator taking livestock, as well as incidental damage from wildlife movements or feeding. Common perpetrators include deer, boar, geese, other birds, or marine mammals that raid nets or gear.

Management aims to reduce depredation through a mix of strategies, including physical barriers (fences, netting), deterrents (scare devices, noise), habitat modification, selective culling or relocation, and, where applicable, compensation schemes. Practices vary by species, region, and legal framework, and typically balance human interests with animal welfare and conservation concerns.

Depredation also appears in discussions of cultural heritage, referring to looting, vandalism, or illicit acquisition of archaeological artifacts, artworks, or cultural property during conflict or upheaval. In this sense, depredation highlights the loss of cultural property and information and is addressed by law enforcement and heritage protection measures.
