Demüelinatsioonihaiguste, also known as demyelinating diseases, are a group of neurological disorders characterized by damage to the myelin sheath. Myelin is a fatty substance that insulates nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord, allowing for efficient transmission of nerve impulses. When myelin is damaged or destroyed, nerve signals can be slowed or blocked, leading to a variety of symptoms.

The exact causes of demyelinating diseases are not fully understood, but they are often thought to involve an autoimmune response where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own myelin. Genetics, environmental factors, and viral infections are also considered potential contributing factors.

The symptoms of demyelinating diseases can vary widely depending on the location and extent of myelin damage. Common symptoms include problems with vision, such as blurred vision or double vision, sensory disturbances like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, fatigue, coordination difficulties, and problems with bladder or bowel control. Cognitive impairments, such as memory problems or difficulty concentrating, can also occur.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease. Other examples include neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM).

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of neurological examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to visualize lesions in the brain and spinal cord, and sometimes spinal fluid analysis. While there is currently no cure for most demyelinating diseases, treatments focus on managing symptoms, reducing inflammation, and slowing disease progression. Rehabilitation therapies are often an important part of management.
