Demodulaatioon

Demodulaatioon is the process of extracting the original information signal from a modulated carrier wave. It is the inverse operation of modulation and is essential in most communications systems. In practical terms, a demodulator converts the received signal into a form suitable for use by the end device, such as audio, video, or digital data.

Demodulation techniques depend on the type of modulation used. For analog modulation, common methods include envelope detection for amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency discrimination or phase-locked loops for frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM).

For digital modulation, demodulation aims to recover symbol values. This may involve coherent detection with a reference carrier, non-coherent detection, symbol timing recovery, and decision logic. Examples include PSK, QAM, and FSK, often implemented with mixers, local oscillators, filters, and digital signal processing.

Performance of demodulaatioon is affected by noise, interference, distortion, and synchronization errors. Channel conditions, such as multipath fading and Doppler shift, influence the choice of demodulation scheme, including the use of error-correcting codes and equalization.
