Demarkationsproblemet, also known as the problem of demarcation, is a central issue in the philosophy of science concerning the criteria that distinguish scientific theories from non-scientific or pseudoscientific claims. The problem arose in the context of the Enlightenment and subsequent scientific developments, as philosophers and scientists sought clear boundaries to define what constitutes scientific knowledge.

The primary challenge of demarcation is to develop an objective standard that can reliably differentiate scientific theories from metaphysical, religious, or pseudoscientific assertions. This issue became prominent with the rise of various intellectual movements questioning the scientific status of certain claims and methods.

One influential approach was proposed by the philosopher Karl Popper, who suggested falsifiability as a criterion. According to Popper, a theory is considered scientific if it can, in principle, be tested and potentially refuted by empirical evidence. This criterion was intended to exclude hypotheses that are untestable or unfalsifiable, such as astrology or certain metaphysical propositions.

Other notable perspectives include those of Thomas Kuhn, who emphasized the role of scientific paradigms and shifts rather than strict demarcation criteria, and Imre Lakatos, who proposed a methodology of research programs with progressive or degenerative lines.

Despite various proposals, the demarcation problem remains unresolved and subject to ongoing debate. Critics argue that no single criterion can encompass all scientific endeavors or exclude all non-scientific ones. Nonetheless, the problem continues to influence discussions about the nature of science, scientific methodology, and the boundaries of knowledge.
