Degtyars

Degtyars are a type of firearm accessory, specifically a cleaning rod. They are commonly associated with Soviet and Russian small arms, such as the Kalashnikov rifle series. A degtyar is typically a metal rod, often made of steel, designed to be inserted down the barrel of a firearm to remove fouling, carbon buildup, and other debris. It usually has a threaded end or a handle that allows for the attachment of cleaning patches or brushes.

The primary function of a degtyar is to facilitate the cleaning process of a rifle or machine gun barrel. By pushing a patch soaked in cleaning solvent through the bore, it helps loosen and remove residues that can accumulate after firing. Brushes attached to the degtyar can then be used to scrub away stubborn deposits. The rod's length is generally sufficient to pass through the entire length of the barrel, allowing for thorough cleaning from breech to muzzle.

Degtyars are often stored in a compartment within the buttstock of the firearm, making them a readily available tool for field maintenance. This integrated storage design was a common feature in many Soviet-era weapons, ensuring that soldiers had the necessary equipment for immediate upkeep of their weapons. The term "degtyar" itself is derived from the name of its inventor, Gavril Degtyaryov, a prominent Soviet small arms designer. While the specific design might vary slightly between different weapon systems, the fundamental purpose of the degtyar remains consistent: to maintain the cleanliness and operational readiness of the firearm's barrel.
