Degreerimine

Degreerimine, often translated as degreasing, is the process of removing grease, oils, fats and other contaminants from surfaces. The goal is to prepare surfaces for subsequent finishing, coating, bonding or assembly, by ensuring adhesion, corrosion resistance, or functional performance.

Methods used to degrease vary by application. Solvent degreasing employs volatile organic solvents such as mineral spirits, kerosene, or chlorinated solvents. Aqueous degreasing uses hot detergents, alkaline cleaners and surfactants to emulsify contaminants, often with agitation or ultrasonic assistance. Mechanical methods include steam cleaning and high-pressure washing. Ultrasonic degreasing uses sound waves in a cleaning bath to enhance cleaning action. In practice, many processes combine methods to balance effectiveness, cost, and safety.

Common targets include metal parts and components (machined or cast), automotive and aerospace parts, electronic assemblies, tools and machinery, and some plastics. Surface compatibility is important, as certain plastics or coatings can be damaged by solvents or high pH levels. After degreasing, parts are typically rinsed to remove residues and then dried, sometimes followed by passivation, coating, or primer application to prevent corrosion or improve adhesion.

Safety, environmental impact, and regulation are important considerations. Solvent-based degreasers can pose fire hazards and health risks; proper ventilation, storage, and waste handling are required. Increasing use is made of aqueous, low-VOC, or bio-based cleaners as alternatives. Regulations in many regions address solvent emissions, worker exposure, and waste disposal, encouraging safer and more sustainable degreasing options.
