Mechano-chemical coupling describes interactions between mechanical and chemical fields that underlie deformation-assisted behavior.

Applications and phenomena studied under this concept span diffusion under stress, deformation-assisted phase transformations, strain-enhanced diffusion during annealing, and deformation-influenced oxidation, corrosion, or catalysis on strained surfaces.

Research methods combine in situ mechanical testing with microscopy or spectroscopy, tracer diffusion under load, and computational approaches such as molecular dynamics or dislocation dynamics with applied stress.

Limitations include material dependence, temperature sensitivity, and competing effects such as work hardening or cracking. Clear interpretation requires careful control of experimental conditions and modeling assumptions.
