The most common context for these conditions is diving, where divers experience increased pressure with depth.

The primary cause of decompressiegerelateerd issues is the absorption of inert gases, typically nitrogen, into the body's tissues under pressure. When the pressure is reduced too quickly during ascent, these dissolved gases can form bubbles within the tissues and bloodstream. This phenomenon is analogous to opening a carbonated beverage, where dissolved carbon dioxide forms bubbles as the pressure decreases.

The symptoms of decompressiegerelateerd illness, commonly known as decompression sickness (DCS) or "the bends," can vary widely. They range from mild joint pain, skin rash, and fatigue to more severe neurological symptoms such as paralysis, dizziness, and cognitive impairment. In extreme cases, it can be life-threatening.

Prevention is key and involves adhering to strict decompression protocols. Divers follow dive tables or use dive computers that calculate safe ascent rates and mandatory decompression stops. These stops allow the dissolved inert gases to be eliminated from the body gradually, preventing bubble formation. Divers may also use breathing gas mixtures with lower concentrations of nitrogen, such as heliox or nitrox, to reduce gas loading.

Treatment for decompressiegerelateerd conditions typically involves recompression in a hyperbaric chamber, which simulates the higher pressures experienced underwater. This helps to reduce the size of any gas bubbles and facilitates their reabsorption. Oxygen therapy is also administered to aid in the elimination of inert gases.
