Davits
Davits are a type of crane or derrick used to deploy and recover small boats, lifeboats, rafts, or other heavy equipment from a ship or elevated position. They are commonly found on the decks of vessels and are designed to allow for safe and controlled lowering and raising. Davits typically consist of a pivoting arm or a set of arms that can be swung out over the side of the vessel. They are often operated manually or with powered winches. The primary function of davits is to provide a secure mechanism for launching and retrieving buoyant craft, especially in emergency situations where quick deployment is critical. They can be made from various materials, including steel and aluminum, and their design can vary significantly depending on the size of the vessel and the type of equipment they are intended to handle. Modern davits often incorporate safety features such as brakes and load limiters to prevent accidents. They are a crucial piece of safety equipment on virtually all types of watercraft, from small yachts to large commercial ships and naval vessels.
