Dataforvaltningskomité

Dataforvaltningskomité, literally “data management committee,” is a governing body responsible for the oversight of data management and governance within an organization or public sector entity. Its remit covers the creation and enforcement of the organization’s data governance framework, including data quality, data architecture, metadata management, data security, privacy, and compliance with applicable laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Responsibilities: the committee develops and maintains data standards, policies on data access and sharing, and procedures for data retention and disposal. It oversees data stewardship and data cataloging, monitors data quality metrics, and approves data sharing agreements with third parties. It also ensures risk assessment and privacy impact assessments are conducted and reports to senior management or a supervisory board.

Composition: typically includes a Chief Data Officer or equivalent, a data protection officer or legal/compliance representative, information technology leaders, data stewards, business area representatives, and sometimes external advisors. The chair facilitates decision-making and ensures accountability.

Procedures: the committee meets regularly, maintains terms of reference, approves data policies and significant data projects, reviews risk registers, and publishes annual reports on data governance performance.

Context: strong data governance structures are common in government bodies in Norway and other jurisdictions, designed to safeguard privacy, ensure data quality, and enable responsible reuse of data while complying with legal frameworks.
