Darreichung

Darreichung is the German term for the presentation or administration form of a medicinal product. In pharmacology and pharmacy it denotes how a drug is presented to the patient and delivered to the body, including the route of administration, the physical dosage form, and packaging and labeling. The term is closely related to, and often used interchangeably with, Darreichungsform (dosage form).

Typical Darreichungsformen include tablets and capsules for oral use, solutions, suspensions and injectables, topical preparations such as creams and ointments, transdermal patches, inhalation products, rectal and vaginal dosage forms, and suppositories. The choice of form affects bioavailability, stability, storage conditions, dosing accuracy and patient acceptance.

Regulatory and clinical contexts use the concept of Darreichung to classify and describe medicines, with Darreichungsform as the formal term for their dosage form in labeling, pharmacopoeias and pharmacovigilance. Etymologically, the word derives from darreichen “to hand over; to present,” reflecting its role in delivering a drug to a patient.
