Darmentzündungen, also known as enteritis, refer to inflammation of the small intestine. This condition can affect individuals of all ages and may be caused by a variety of factors. Common causes include infections from bacteria, viruses, or parasites, as well as certain medications, particularly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Food allergies or intolerances, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, can also lead to inflammation of the intestine.

Symptoms of darmentzündungen can vary depending on the severity and underlying cause, but often include diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, and vomiting. Fever may also be present in cases of infection. Dehydration is a significant concern, especially with severe diarrhea, and can lead to electrolyte imbalances.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and may include stool tests to identify infectious agents or blood tests to check for inflammation and hydration levels. In some instances, imaging studies like an endoscopy or colonoscopy might be performed to visualize the intestinal lining and obtain tissue samples for biopsy.

Treatment for darmentzündungen focuses on addressing the underlying cause and managing symptoms. For infectious causes, antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed. For inflammatory bowel diseases, specific treatments targeting the immune system are employed. Symptomatic relief often involves rest, increased fluid intake to prevent dehydration, and dietary modifications, such as avoiding irritants and opting for bland foods. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for intravenous fluid rehydration and medical management.
