Darkwoods

Darkwoods is a vast, densely forested region located in the northern temperate zone, spanning portions of river valleys and highland plateaus that form the southern boundary of the Starcrest Basin. The area covers several thousand square kilometers and remains largely undeveloped, featuring a patchwork of coniferous forests, peat bogs, and braided rivers. The landscape supports a range of microhabitats, from open glades to dense understory stands.

The forests are dominated by spruce and fir, with broadleaf thickets at the edges. The terrain includes deep moss, fallen logs, and ancient stumps. The climate is cool and wet, with frequent fog in the mornings and heavy snow in winter at higher elevations. The region sustains fauna such as elk, brown bears, lynx, wolves, beavers, and a variety of birds and insects, and hosts several rare plant communities that depend on the continuity of old-growth habitat.

Historically, Darkwoods was sparsely settled by nomadic groups prior to European exploration in the early modern period. Following industrial extraction in the surrounding areas, conservation concerns grew, culminating in the establishment of the Darkwoods Conservancy in the mid- to late 20th century. The organization prioritizes strict protection, habitat restoration, and controlled access for research and limited tourism, coordinating with governmental bodies and local communities.

Access and governance are tightly regulated. The area is designated as a protected zone with permits required for researchers and tour operators. Activities emphasize ecological monitoring, restoration projects, and sustainable ecotourism, with enforcement aimed at preventing illegal logging, wildlife disturbance, and pollution. Research stations operate within core zones to advance science and conservation.

Local folklore accompanies the land, with stories of lingering lights, mysterious sounds, and ancient trees guarding hidden trails. These legends are treated as cultural lore alongside the scientific understanding of the ecosystem.
