Dampflokführer is the German term for a steam locomotive driver. This individual is responsible for operating a steam engine, controlling its speed, and ensuring its safe and efficient running. The role requires a deep understanding of the locomotive's mechanics, steam pressure, water levels, and the track ahead.

The duties of a Dampflokführer are multifaceted. They must be able to fire the boiler, typically by shoveling coal or stoking wood, to generate the necessary steam. Simultaneously, they manage the regulator, which controls the flow of steam to the cylinders and thus the locomotive's power and speed. Coordination with a fireman, who assists with the boiler and fire, is crucial, though in some smaller locomotives, the driver may perform both roles.
