Dampfkammern

Dampfkammern, often translated as steam chambers or steam rooms, are enclosed spaces designed to be filled with warm, moist air. These rooms are typically found in spas, saunas, and wellness centers, offering a distinct experience from dry saunas. The humidity level in a dampfkammer is generally high, often reaching 100%, while the temperature is considerably lower than in a traditional sauna, usually ranging between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius (104 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit).

The steam is generated by a steam generator that heats water and injects it into the room. This process creates a dense, visible mist that permeates the space. The gentle, humid heat is believed to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension, and improve circulation. Unlike dry saunas, the high humidity can also be beneficial for respiratory conditions, helping to open airways and loosen congestion.

Dampfkammern are constructed from materials that can withstand constant exposure to high humidity, such as ceramic tiles, glass, or specialized waterproof panels. Seating is typically made of the same waterproof materials. The experience is often enhanced with aromatherapy, where essential oils are added to the steam to provide therapeutic benefits. Before entering a dampfkammer, it is recommended to hydrate and to limit the duration of the session, especially for individuals with certain health conditions. After the session, a cool shower is often suggested to help the body re-regulate its temperature.
