Dalatiidae

Dalatiidae is a family of cartilaginous fishes commonly known as kitefin sharks. These sharks are characterized by their stout bodies, broad heads, and distinctive large pectoral fins that often give them a kite-like appearance. They are found in deep waters of temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, typically inhabiting the continental slopes and abyssal plains.

The diet of dalatiids varies depending on the species but generally includes a range of prey such as squid, crustaceans, and smaller fish. Some species are known to be opportunistic feeders. The family includes a few notable genera, such as Dalatias and Isistius. The cookiecutter shark (Isistius brasiliensis), a member of this family, is famous for its unique feeding behavior of taking circular chunks of flesh from larger marine animals.

Reproduction in dalatiids is ovoviviparous, meaning the eggs hatch inside the mother's body, and the young are born alive. The family is not typically targeted by commercial fisheries, though some species may be caught as bycatch. Due to their deep-sea habitat, much of their life history and behavior remains poorly understood. Conservation status varies among species, with some facing threats from habitat degradation and overfishing in certain regions.
