Dakdekker

Dakdekker, or roof tiler, is a tradesperson who specializes in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of roofs. The term is Dutch, and the occupation is common in the Netherlands and Flanders. They install and repair roof coverings on residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, and may work on new construction as well as renovations. Typical duties include inspecting roof structures, selecting appropriate materials, preparing substrates, and ensuring weatherproofing. They apply coverings, install underlayment and insulation, fit flashing, seal joints, and install components such as vents, chimneys, and skylights. They also perform repairs to leaks, replace damaged tiles or panels, and carry out preventive maintenance to extend roof life.

Common roofing materials include clay and concrete tiles, slate, metal sheets, and bitumen membranes, as well as newer synthetic products. Roofs may be pitched or flat, and the choice of material depends on climate, building style, and budget. Dakdekkers use a range of tools and equipment, such as ladders, scaffolding, tile nippers, slate cutters, coil nails or staple guns, torches for bitumen, and harnesses for fall protection.

Training and qualification: In many countries, dakdekkers learn through vocational training combined with on‑the‑job apprenticeship. They typically start as assistants and progress to journeyman status after completing a training program and a period of supervised work. Safety training, including fall protection, safe handling of tools, and working at height, is an essential component. Some regions require licensing or certification for certain roofing systems.

Work environment: Dakdekkers work outdoors in all weather, often at height on pitched roofs or on high-rise buildings, and may work in teams or independently. The profession emphasizes precision, knowledge of materials, and adherence to building codes and safety regulations.
