Dachbereich, literally “umbrella area” or “roof area,” is a term used in German-speaking organizations to describe an overarching organizational unit that groups several subunits under a common leadership and strategic mandate. It denotes an umbrella structure that coordinates related activities across Fachbereiche (departments) or functional domains without constituting a separate legal entity.

Typical features include cross-functional coordination, strategic governance, and the provision of shared services or standards that apply across the subunits. A Dachbereich is usually led by a director or head and may employ a small core staff; its formal authority and budget depend on the organization’s governance framework. In many cases, the Dachbereich does not control a distinct P&L, but aligns priorities, resources, and policies across the included units to achieve coherent objectives.

In organizational practice, the Dachbereich sits above the subunits in the management hierarchy and interfaces with top executive levels.
