DMIScapable

DMIScapable is a designation used in metrology to indicate that a device, software package, or system can work with the Dimensional Measuring Interface Standard (DMIS). DMIS is a standard for describing, programming, and exchanging information about coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and related measuring equipment, including measurement procedures, programs, and results. A DMIScapable product can read and interpret DMIS programs, execute them on compatible hardware, and generate DMIS-compliant result data or reports.

In practice, DMIScapable systems may include a DMIS interpreter or runtime, and may offer tools to import, translate, or adapt DMIS programs for use on different CMMs. They are designed to enable interoperability across vendors, support program reuse, and streamline the deployment of measurement campaigns across fleets that include multiple brands of equipment.

Benefits of DMIScapable solutions include reduced reprogramming work, consistent measurement workflows, and easier data exchange between machines and software. The label is commonly found in product literature and specifications to signal compatibility with the DMIS ecosystem. However, conformance levels can vary between products; some implement only portions of the DMIS specification or support specific DMIS versions.

Conformance is often validated through internal testing or external conformance test suites offered by DMIS standards organizations. DMIS itself is related to, but distinct from, ISO 10360 standards for coordinate measuring machines, and is focused on program and data interchange as well as workflow interoperability within metrology environments.
