Cypress

Cypress is a common name for several coniferous trees and shrubs in the family Cupressaceae. It refers to species in genera such as Cupressus, Chamaecyparis, and Taxodium (including the bald cypress). Cypress plants are evergreen with scale-like foliage and typically resinous wood. They are native to the Northern Hemisphere, with many species adapted to warm, dry, or coastal environments, and have been cultivated worldwide for ornamental and timber uses.

In horticulture, cypress trees are valued for their columnar forms and evergreen foliage. Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) and Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) are popular landscape trees. Cypress wood is prized for durability and resistance to rot and has been used for fencing, boatbuilding, and exterior construction as well as decorative furniture.
