Typical components of a cyclist-friendly setting include protected or segregated bike lanes, safe intersections, traffic-calming measures, and network continuity; ample, secure bike parking and facilities such as repair stands; clear signage and wayfinding; and supportive policies such as permissive parking rules for bikes, reduced motor-vehicle speeds, and accessible bike-share programs. In addition, planning often emphasizes affordable access, maintenance of infrastructure, and inclusive design for people of all ages and abilities.

Assessment of cyclist-friendliness varies; some places use formal designations or scoring by cycling organizations, while others rely on metrics like bike mode share, safety outcomes, or network density. Notable examples include national or regional programs by cycling associations, and well-known cities widely regarded as cyclist-friendly due to extensive networks and culture of cycling, such as Copenhagen or Amsterdam, as well as mid-sized cities with local initiatives. Businesses or tourism boards may prominently advertise themselves as cyclist-friendly to attract riders.

Critics argue that the term can be ambiguous or marketing-driven, and that improvements for cyclists must be integrated with pedestrian, transit, and broader equity goals.
