Culpeos

Culpeos refers to the inhabitants of the commune of Culpeo, located in the Aysén Region of southern Chile. The commune lies within the administrative division of the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Province and covers an area of approximately 1,750 square kilometres. As of the 2017 national census, the population of Culpeo was around 210 residents, giving it a very low population density.

The region is characterised by its rugged Patagonian landscape, featuring river valleys, alpine meadows, and a temperate oceanic climate. The local economy is traditionally based on livestock farming, particularly cattle and sheep ranching, which has been a mainstay since European settlement in the late 19th century. In recent years, rural tourism has begun to supplement the pastoral economy, with visitors attracted to the area's natural scenery, hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife observation.

Culpeo’s history is intertwined with the broader settlement of the Aysén Region, which saw an influx of Europeans in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who established small ranches and introduced modern agricultural techniques. The name "Culpeo" is derived from the Mapudungun language, the indigenous tongue of the Mapuche people, and it is generally interpreted as meaning “half” or “partial,” though the precise etymology remains subject to scholarly debate.

Today, the Culpeos community maintains a modest infrastructure network, including a primary school, a health post, and a small village centre that serves as the administrative hub of the commune. Transportation links are limited, with the main access route being a gravel road that connects to the Ruta 7, the principal highway traversing the Aysén Region. Public services and economic activity remain limited, reflecting the commune’s remote location and sparse population.
