Culbin

Culbin is an area on the northeast coast of Scotland in Moray, just north of Findhorn Bay and near Forres. It comprises Culbin Forest, the Culbin Sands coastal dunes, and the historic landscape surrounding the former Culbin Estate. The name is associated with one of Scotland's best-known geomorphological and cultural episodes: shifting dunes and a centuries-long effort to reclaim and manage the land.

In 1694 a severe storm and winds reshaped the coastline, burying acres of farmland and a number of villages. The Culbin estates were largely abandoned as land was engulfed by sand; the area remained unsettled for centuries, with only sporadic cultivation and erosion evidence. In the 20th century, the Forestry Commission established Culbin Forest on part of the freed land, and it has since become one of the region’s major woodland resources. The forest today is a mosaic of conifer plantations and native broadleaf trees, with a network of tracks for walking, cycling, and horse riding.

Culbin Sands lies to the east and comprises a long dune system and sandy beach that support diverse coastal habitats, including dune grasslands and marshy pockets. The area is valued for wildlife and is a site for birdwatching, with species typical of Moray’s coastal habitats.

Access is via local roads serving Forres and Findhorn, with car parks and waymarked trails. The Culbin area is used for recreation, nature conservation, and landscape history, illustrating the interaction between geomorphology, forestry, and coast management in Scotland.
