Findhorn

Findhorn is a coastal village, river inlet, and bay on the Moray Firth coast in northeast Scotland. It lies near the town of Forres in Moray, with the Findhorn River flowing into Findhorn Bay, which opens into the Moray Firth. The surrounding area features coastal dunes, wetlands, and estuarine habitats that support wildlife and fisheries.

In 1962, the Findhorn Foundation was established by Peter Caddy, Eileen Caddy, and Dorothy Maclean as a spiritual and educational community. What began as a small settlement of caravans and cottages evolved into the Findhorn Ecovillage, a sustainable living community that integrates ecology, education, and personal development.

The Foundation runs courses, workshops, and retreats focused on ecology, spirituality, and community life. The ecovillage emphasizes renewable energy, eco-building, and organic horticulture, including the Findhorn Garden, created in the 1960s and 1970s, which attracted international attention for its innovative gardening methods and productivity.

Today Findhorn remains a destination for visitors and researchers interested in sustainable living, spirituality, and nature. It is part of the Moray council area and supports local tourism, hospitality, and cultural activities. The natural environment around Findhorn Bay is managed with regional designations to protect wildlife, and access is provided by roads linking to Forres and the surrounding towns.
