Cuesgestural

Cuesgestural is a term used in fields such as linguistics, psychology, and human–computer interaction to describe the systematic integration of cues with gestural signals to convey meaning in communication. The concept centers on how nonverbal cues—eye gaze, facial expression, head and body orientation, prosody, posture, and timing—are coordinated with hand and body gestures to augment or modify spoken or written messages.

In practice, cuesgestural analysis seeks to understand how cue salience, reliability, and timing influence interpretation. It encompasses cue weighting (how much a given cue influences understanding), cue conflict resolution (how listeners prioritize competing signals), and cross-modal alignment (how gestures synchronize with speech or signs). The approach is relevant to sign language studies, multimodal discourse analysis, and the design of gestural interfaces in technology.

Methods used to study cuesgestural communication include multimodal annotation, motion capture, video analysis, and eye-tracking to quantify gesture-cue relationships. Applications appear in education and clinical settings to improve communication skills, in sign language interpretation to clarify meaning, and in human–computer interaction and robotics to create more natural, responsive interfaces.
