This species is part of the Viperidae family, which includes other venomous snakes such as the adder and the horned viper.

Crvenom is a medium-sized snake, typically growing to lengths of about 50-60 centimeters. It has a triangular head with a distinct pit between the eye and the nostril, which is characteristic of the viper family. The body is slender and muscular, with a pattern of dark brown or black spots on a lighter background. The tail is relatively short and tapers to a point.
