Cowes

Cowes is a seaport town and civil parish on the north coast of the Isle of Wight, England. It lies opposite East Cowes on the eastern bank of the River Medina and faces the Solent, across which Portsmouth sits on the mainland. The town is one of the two main settlements commonly referred to as Cowes and East Cowes, with a rich maritime heritage dating back centuries.

Historically a shipbuilding and repair centre, Cowes developed into a premier yachting town in the 19th century and remains a hub for boating and marine services. It is home to the Royal Yacht Squadron, one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world, whose clubhouse and harbour area dominate the waterfront. The harbour comprises inner and outer facilities that support a range of sailing activity and marine businesses.

The annual Cowes Week regatta is a key feature of the town, attracting large crowds and international competitors. The event underpins local tourism and maritime culture. Osborne House, Queen Victoria's seaside residence, is located in East Cowes, linking the area to royal history. The town's economy today relies on tourism, sailing, and nautical industries, reinforced by multiple marinas and boatyards along the harbour.

Governance: Cowes is a civil parish within the Isle of Wight Council unitary authority. Transport connections to the mainland are provided by ferries serving the island, including a major link between Southampton and East Cowes for car and passenger services, along with additional routes.
