Counterpoisoning refers to the set of medical interventions used to counteract the effects of a poison or toxic substance in the body. This can involve administering antidotes, which are specific substances that bind to or neutralize the poison, or employing supportive care to manage symptoms and organ function while the body eliminates the toxin. The effectiveness of counterpoisoning depends heavily on the type of poison, the dose ingested or absorbed, and the timeliness of treatment.

There are several categories of counterpoisoning strategies. One common method is the administration of activated charcoal, which can adsorb certain poisons in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. Another approach involves gastric lavage, where the stomach is flushed out to remove ingested toxins, though this is less frequently used now due to its risks.
