Coralburst

Coralburst is a cultivar of *Hydrangea macrophylla*, commonly known as the bigleaf hydrangea. This particular variety is prized for its vibrant, multi-colored blooms. The flower heads typically display a striking combination of coral pink and a deep, rich magenta. The color intensity can be influenced by the soil's pH level, with more acidic soil tending to produce bluer hues, though Coralburst often retains pink and magenta tones across a range of pH.

This deciduous shrub typically grows to a moderate size, reaching about 3 to 5 feet in height and width. Coralburst is known for its attractive, dark green foliage which provides a good contrast to the colorful blooms. It generally flowers in summer, with the large, mophead-style flower clusters appearing on old wood. As such, pruning is best done immediately after flowering to avoid removing the next season's flower buds.

Coralburst is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9. It prefers partial shade, especially protection from intense afternoon sun, and benefits from well-draining, consistently moist soil. Its showy flowers make it a popular choice for ornamental gardens, borders, and container plantings. Like other bigleaf hydrangeas, the spent blooms can often be left on the plant through winter for added visual interest and to provide some protection to the dormant buds.
