Exact formulations vary, but the goal is to tailor strength, wear resistance, and functional properties without prohibitive loss of conductivity.

Composition and microstructure typically feature a copper-dominant matrix with nickel as a principal alloying element and rare earths in small amounts (roughly 0.1–5 wt% RE). Rare earths may form dispersed precipitates or intermetallic phases that strengthen the material and influence grain structure and magnetic behavior. The balance of nickel content is chosen to achieve the desired conductivity and mechanical properties.

Properties depend on composition but generally retain good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance, with increased yield strength and elevated-temperature performance due to rare earth additions. Magnetic characteristics can emerge from nickel and rare earth interactions, making the material of interest for sensors or magnetically active components. Processing challenges include oxide formation and redistribution of rare earths during thermal treatment.

Production methods follow conventional metal-joining techniques: melting and alloying copper, nickel, and rare earth elements under inert or vacuum conditions, followed by casting or powder metallurgy and homogenization. Hot working and controlled cooling refine the microstructure and precipitate distributions.

Applications are largely experimental. Researchers explore potential uses in high-temperature, corrosion-resistant conductors, specialized magnets, and components for harsh environments.
